It's official. I have finally gone to Maui. Ever since I started this sport (age 16, now 40 = 24 years), I have dreamed of going. Wind was gustier, and not as strong as I hoped. If I weighed 75 lbs. less, it might have been perfect. Winds were a little more easterly and lighter than the usual trades. That said, there was wind everyday! I rented from Hi-Tech. Super nice guys (Alex and Steve). Had my pick of Ezzy wave SE's up to 5.8 and Maui Sails Globals up to 6.2. Board selection was great for the average guy or beginner, but there was a huge gap between 105 liters and 135liters for me. I tried to sail a RRD 100liter FSW, but it was a total sinker for someone my size. I ended up on the RRD 135liter Z-ride by default. It got a little bouncy when the wind picked up in the afternoon. Water and scenery was incredible. Crystal clear water and warm! Better than my best dream. Sea turtles everywhere and tropical fish at any reef. Waves generated by swell and not wind, what a treat! Biggest air for me so far. Saw pros Martin Van Greenhoven, Levi Siver, Keith Taboul, Josh Stone. Ate like a king. Favorite place was Paia Fish Market and also Sansei for sushi. We did Mama's Fish house as well, and I ate a Mahi Mahi caught by Alan Cadiz! It was good, but I set new high for money spent on a meal. I am glad I went to have the experience, but next time I will save the cash and get an ono burger from Paia Fish Market. Did Haleakala sunrise and the Sliding Sands trail. Blew up my hiking boots. Did the snorkel at Molokini. Did the road to Hana, and walked on both black and red sand beaches. Got a sunburn on the Wailea Beach. We stayed at a nice bungalow on Baby Beach in Sprecks. Awesome views, and jet noise was no problem. Saved money by eating in a lot. We hit Costco when we arrived. Although the sailing was not perfect, it was good enough, and plentyful. I am definitely going back someday. Soon.
