9 hrs 42 mins!! Okay, that is including some cooler stops, but I never left the water due to Alissa's idea of bouying the cooler out in the water. Fortunately, I also had bouyed my 69 liter board out there too, as a switch was absolutely in order. I was still overpowered on the 5.0, but the miles were racking up, and I was hesitant to leave the water and rerig. It was cool going all the way across to King Ranch. I had never even gone past island #1! I kept thinking of the people who sailed across the ocean (yah, I know it's a stretch). I saw a dolphin - it looked quite big. It was all by itself like me. I saw Alissa and Brian quite frequently and every 6 miles or so I saw a whole bunch of people speeding around Bird. They looked like they were having a lot of fun - what a great day for speed runs (I guess, I really have no basis for saying this other than that it was veerrryy windy). I tried to end the day with a fast tack, which I almost pulled off. Alissa came running out spraying beer. The timing of my finish coincided with the speed awards, so everyone was so sweet congratulating Alissa and me. They made my 45 minutes of fame a lasting memory - then Brian came in with 5.8 miles more than me, but everyone had gone home. Brian deserves the biggest accolades in my book, especially because I was just about ready to call it quits at 90 miles, when he gave me a much needed pep talk. All in all, it was a great day - one that I will never repeat.
