088 - The 7th sorta annual Canal Crawl Circumnavigation was today, with sunny, warm and light wind conditions.  A SUP and 7 windsurfers completed the 4+ mile course in 1 1/2-2 hours.  The very light winds just added to the challenge (proving it doesn't require much wind) making it one of the toughest crawls on the current route with a few milestones.  The most participants ever, longest distance travelled by a participant, first time a SUP completed the race and first time a first timer ever won.  Throughout the race the first 3 positions changed several times, as did the 4th and 5th and last two positions, all positions had very close finishes.  Kevin and Alissa held the lead at the start, Kevin ended up winning, Alissa placed second and Chip maintained a solid third place.  The flats proved too shallow to completely sail across resulting in several 4th position changes between Kevin , Dave and me.  Chip was successful taking the deep water route and Patrick on a SUP ditched the sail during the first leg and paddled to a fourth place finish, easily passing me and Dave near the end of the last leg.  My start was a terrible sixth position until moving into third part way through the last leg, finishing in 5th place among the windsurfers, 6th place overall.  First timer Steve was tough and did well considering his fixed daggerboard was limited in the shallow water.  Even 6 time veteran Don had difficulty throughout the course.
