Yesterday, I got the kids involved with AWC's Learn to Windsurf. It was run in conjunction with Roger Jackson and Ellen Faller's Taste of Windsurfing tour. No wind, poor organization, and hot as hell. That said, it kicked off my season teaching the kids. Roger actually spent a little time with both of them on the water. Considering the mayhem, I am very grateful. I wanted to get them out today to reenforce some of the fundamentals. Unfortunately, the report was ZERO mph until 3:30p when a mild southerly filled in. I packed them up, and off we went. They did great! I take two Laser mainsheets (Marstron) and tie them together. Then I tie one to the rear strap of the START. I let them go until the rope runs out. Then I have them drop the sail and reel them in. I then start them again. Shannon (10) was able to do this last year. Evan (7) was unable to uphaul the 2.5, so I got a 1.6. This year, he was able to get the 2.5 up (with a struggle), and he got to the end of the rope twice without falling. He was stoked! To challenge Shannon, I got out the F175, and tied the nose of her START to the chickenstrap of the F175 with one of the Laser mainsheets. This worked awesome. We sailed together out to the channel and back. I was worried we would end up downwind, but no problem. She even did a successful tack without getting wet (with a little help turning the nose with the line). I was very proud of her. We kicked off the season, getting the groms started right! Watch-out, Flakas next.
