37 my 100 mile day by alissa 5:20 a.m. wake up 6:30 a.m. get to BIB 7:30 a.m. hit the water with Brian & Laura, determined to hit 200 miles 1 hour in: still finding planing wind only in the KR side, and not even all the time. 2 hours in: wind is up, I learn that I rarely surpass 20 mph even fully powered. not trying anything harder than a jibe so as not to get Paul's GPS too wet. 3 hours in: spirits are low, decide I hate the GPS. 3:15 in: take a break @ flotaing cooler station, food remotivates me (despite learning that the bobber and my veggies have filled with laguna water). reach my peak speed of 28.5 3:30 in: abandon my rig to swim after someone's gear. remember to turn the GPS on that I shut off on break! 3:45 in: reach 78 miles and go in to rerig 2 sail sizes down. on the beach decide I won't go back out after all. 4:45 in: change of heart, I will go back out but not use the GPS. freestyle. on small sail. hours 5-6: messing around trying body drags etc. Carrie photographs me on some "speed" runs & freestyle attempts. 7 hours in: get the GPS back and decide I HAVE to get to 100 at least. 8:30 in: hit 100 miles! ditch the GPS and head back out to mess around. 8:35 in: catapault and see that as a sign to quit. 9 something in: Laura hits 150 miles, gets sprayed with Miller lite. She and I get photographed like heroes on the beach (even though I quit early!) A half hour or so later: Brian passes 150 miles, but misses the hero's welcome because everyone's gone or exhausted :( So overall being a distance windsurfer is not for me, I don't have the patience or the gear. It's definitely an art, something that really takes a lot to be good at. But I had a great day on the water trying, and it's the first time I've sailed close to 9 hours.
