Apparently now the gate at Kalmus is locked til 9...which would piss me off if I were a taxpayer or paid for a beach sticker. But since I am a freeloader, I welcomed being able to park illegally and unload my gear in peace. After rigging I moved the car to HYC. Sailed reaches for a while with a couple others in the windsurfing area, worked on some stuff, then headed out exploring.

I caught the morning fast ferry, but misjudged the bend in the channel and missed its wave. I reached out to the spindle off Hyannisport, then tacked up to the Point Gammon lighthouse and "mini Maui." I'd always heard about it but had never been. I was surprised by the swells lining up around the point. It reminded me of Port A out by the tip of the jetty--mostly not breaking or smooth faces, but very clearly defined and definitely rideable. These were smaller, though...but then again it was only blowing 18 and had been calm for a week, so I bet it could ramp up. I rode around in the channel for a bit, watching the boats, and was debating going over to yarmouth rec sailing to say hi. But the sky turned really black, the wind started swirling by great island, knocking me in a few times, and my fingers turned white (it was 65 degrees but as an honorary texan that is now cold for me). So I actually listened to my common sense and went in.

I had to do this fast broad reach through the mooring field at the yacht club, which definitely had my adreneline up due to the contrast between planing and wind shadows behind boats. It started downpouring, Forrest Gump style (raining down and straight back up), and that was fun! A nice hot shower and a toasty bagel made for a perfect end to the morning. Tomorrow looks like potentially good wind, early, and if so I'm going to try to get into west dennis before the beach opens.
