Went to Bird since we bought some beginner lessons for friends. Also wanted to try the speed thing, and Laura wanted to learn Duck Jibes. Rigged the 5.8 and got the GPS, on my first run out and back, I registerd the highest speed I was going to for the day. Didn't really enjoy the whole GPS thing...so I turned it in fairly soon. The GPS makes you become focused solely on going straight and fast, which is something I gave up on several years ago. 5.8 was too much, switched to 5.0, which quickly became too little as the wind backed off a bit. Gave the "big" stuff to Laura to work on Duck Jibes, while I watched. She came very close to completing one...nice full speed entry...smooth carve...good lean in the turn...good timing on the throw...just didn't quite make it out of the turn. Next time she'll get it, with a fully planing exit. Tried my first attempts at Essex Ducks. Was afraid of trying them before, thinking that the Basset slalom board wasn't wide enough. I don't think the board width is actually a problem. Didn't make any of them...the rig was always too low to the water to recover, and I never really made it all 360 degrees around the board. Very fun to try though. Did boomerangs with my front foot in the strap and in higher wind than previously. Also did some more loop-training catapults. Beer: Full Sail Rip Curl For Sale: 2003 7.5 Sailworks Retro. Practically new. Used once. $395. Not sure what I was thinking when I thought I wanted this size sail. bmiller@prismnet.com
