2016 Texas Windsurfing Festival, Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club hosted by NTWR. My first windsurfing race ever! It will likely be my last too. First, let me say that the NTWR folks, and really everyone at the event, were great. Really nice people. The venue was very nice too. Grassy lawn, nice facilities, lots of space. The lake was pretty with the tollway bridge in the background, and also the weather was very pleasant. The racing was different from what I expected, especially the starts and the course layout. I sailed terrible and I may not have finished a race officially. I was over early twice, hit the finish line mark trying to make it across without tacking, and I did not sail the last two races. I am proud that I did not blow a jibe, and I did carefully avoid others that had fallen in at a few of the marks. I had some pretty good speed at times, but my overall control was very shaky, and when not planing or in bad wind, I fell way behind. By the third race I knew that this type of windsurfing is not for me. The usual joy I feel when I freesail, was just not there. I thought it would be more fun and I could reconnect with my youth sailboat racing background. I do not like the lock and load feeling of race gear, and I just don't have any love for competing. My heart is just not in it. There was a lot of sitting on the lawn in between the races, and I felt like I was letting a really nice day go to waste. So, later I decided to rig up the freestyle gear and have fun instead of sailing the last two races. And it WAS fun. I am meant to be a recreational freestyle windsurfer and that is where I belong.
