17th session in 2017
Sailed at Avon Sound, NC
Wind from the NE (mph)
Board: 2013 Choco Rodeo 124 LTD
Sail: 5.3 Severne S-1, 6.3 Severne S-1
Fin: Choco Starfish B72 22cm
Suit: Exotop and boardshorts
Air Temperature: 68 F
Session #1 9a-noon
Overcast clearing to sunshine with building nice NE winds. The water was warm enough to make the Exotop and boardshorts work. I worked on the vulcan. Good tips from Phil. Fun session!
Session #2 4-5:30p
After picking up some fresh Mahi to grill at the end of the day, I went out on the 5.3m to see if the wind was strong enough to rig that small. The sound had become very shallow (and the organizers cancelled the slalom clinic planned for the afternoon despite exellent wind). The wind was very nice and steady in low to mid 20s, you just had to find deep enough water to get out there.
Session #3 6-7:00p
Round 3 freestyle clinic. Phil stayed in one spot and everyone lined up and passed by just downwind instead of him chasing us down and following us. The wind was starting to get holey with punchy gusts. I was having trouble staying enough upwind for him to watch and then I had a violent hook-in vulcan attempt crash where my elbow punched through my sail. I am down to one sail now. Karma for using the sandy beach access so I could sail confidently barefoot. I may need to rent a sail if the wind goes above 20 mph.
