Birthday trip to Corpus. Half the weather models showed a day of 20 mph SE wind, the others about 16 mph. Unfortunately, it averaged about 17 mph. That is enough for a light freerider on 7.0m2 to plane. It was beautiful and warm with lots of sailors. The only people consistently planing were the slalom guys on their 7-8.0s as well as Gordon and Randy on their foils. I really wanted to freestyle windsurf. I finally gave up and came in to rig up the Slingshot just before 3p. Almost everyone was off the water at that point. I rigged down to my 5.9m Freek and went out on the foil. Of course, just then, the wind decides to turn on to 20-22 mph with some big gusts. I am still unclear how to bleed off powerful gusts when on foil. Normally, I love gusts, but as a beginner on foil, I dread them if I am already powered. I unhook and luff the sail and focus on board trim until they subside. After about 45 minutes of that, I came in to go back to windsurfing with the 5.9 Freek, and of course, the wind backed off again. I asked Gordon at the end of the session for a few pointers. He looked very good on the foil, easily ducking and making all of his gybes.
